Research on the status of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Romania

SRHR Report Cover

Plan international Romania commissioned this research report following feedback from local partners on research on access to comprehensive sexual reproductive health and rights in Romania.

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the current gaps and challenges in accessing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Romania. The key findings reveal that access to SRHR services and information has declined due to current government policies. Furthermore, limited comprehensive sexual education contributes to high rates of teenage pregnancies. The report identifies structural and societal challenges within the Romanian healthcare system that impede access to SRHR, especially for marginalised populations who face additional barriers due to discrimination. Additionally, the findings suggest that these challenges are exacerbated by increasingly conservative gender norms within Romanian society. The study utilised a qualitative research design, incorporating data from youth, civil society organisations, adults with knowledge in SRHR, stakeholder consultation meetings, and literature.
